The Data Liberation Front

The Data Liberation Front is an engineering team at Google whose singular goal is to make it easier for users to move their data in and out of Google products.  We do this because we believe that you should be able to export any data that you create in (or import into) a product.  We help and consult other engineering teams within Google on how to "liberate" their products.

Great things are happening at Google!  This is another fine example of how they are practicing "Not being evil"  by making it easy to control and manage your data.

Google Goggles!

Use pictures to search the web.

A picture is worth a thousand words.No need to type your search anymore. Just take a picture.
Find out what businesses are nearby.Just point your phone at a store.
This is just the beginning - it's not quite perfect yet.Works well for some things, but not for all.
Your pictures, your control.Turn on 'visual search history' to view or share your pictures at any time. Turn it off to discard them once the search is done.
I'm a dedicated iPhone user who is not happy with my my cellular provider, who will remain nameless:)  Here is yet another killer app from google that has me seriously considering a droid.  iPhone Apps vs. Android Apps

Did you read the new TOS of Facebook?  If you didn't then you are sharing your info with "Everyone".

Questions???
1. Is Facebook clueless, unethical or just unlucky? Why?
2. Will Facebook’s latest behavior result in more lawsuits and/or
industry regulation?
3. Do you trust Facebook with your information?

The Michigan Blizzard of 2009

The current blizzard conditions of snowing, blowing, ice, and sub zero wind chill has been raging since December eighth two thousand nine. The storm has caused school cancelations, road closures and massive chaos throughout West Michigan communities. The level of awareness and the ability to prepare for these circumstances has allowed us to be able to cope much better than we have in the past. We should alway remember to be prepared when travelling out in this weather no matter how long or short the distance. Must have items to have with you in your car during winter travel in no particular order:
  1. Jumper cables: So you can help someone or help yourself with a jump.
  2. Blankets: Keeping warm while waiting for a wrecker that could take hours is essential.
  3. Cell phone: even if you have an old one that doesn't have a service plan you can still dial 911 for free.
  4. Protein or Granola bars: because you have to eat:)
  5. Flashlights: The LED style are very effective and can be seen for a long way.
  6. Flairs: Can get the attention of passing vehicles and serve a warning to other passing motorists to steer clear of the area.
  7. Extra set of: clothes, gloves, hats, and a scarf.
  8. Communicate: Tell a friend or family member before you leave, and when you get to your destination.
  9. If you don't have to leave then don't:)
Happy and safe travels!

Best use: Gmail to text notification

Best use: Gmail to text notification:

Identify specific incoming messages, have them forwarded to your phone from gmail via text message so you know instantly when they arrive.

How to use your gmail account to forward a notification via text message.

Goto gmail ~Settings ~ Filters ~ Create a new filter ~ fill in the specific keywords or from category ~ Next step ~ Forward it to:

ATT = your 10 digit number@txt.att.net

Sprint = your 10 digit number@messaging.sprintpcs.com

Verizon = your 10 digit number@vtext.com

T-Mobile = your 10 digit number@tmomail.net

Last step don't forget to hit the create filter button to finish!

Test it, then your done.

Great for the small business person that is on the road or out of the office.

It's a tremendous leap over your competition who don't use instant notification, if you actually follow up when you get the call:)

Wait five minutes...

Battling the common cold.  Sadly most everyone I know is sick and tired from the flu or cold.  The weather changes from warm and comfortable to freezing and wet.  This as we say is "Michigan Weather",  wait five minutes and it will change.  Learning how to deal with the weather can have a direct impact on your health.  I take daily vitamins as well as vitamin C packs with minerals.  Wash my hands frequently, and try not to rub my eyes!

When I'm sick I double up on the C.  Stock up on chicken noodle soup and keep the tea, lemon and honey flowing.  Oh and get lots of rest, not sure how to do that yet but I'm trying!

Search Engine Optimization = Cyber Snake Oil

A fool and his money are soon parted.” Thomas Tusser quotes (English Farmer and Writer. 1524-1580)

Snake oil salesmen out in cyberspace guaranteeing your web site will come up at the top of the google search results if you just pay them!   Beware small business owner looking to generate more traffic for a few dollars.  There really is no quick fix, one time submission or a magic url.  Just relevant content that is useful and accurate to the consumer looking to purchase your product or service.  Want to advertise effectively and stay under budget?  Try Google Adwords, keep your site up to date and relevant.

Drug commercials on television.

I tend to watch a moderate amount of television and I'm disgusted at how many drug commercials are aired. Most of them pray on the weak and desperate, with the promise of feeling better. Drug commercials should be banned and doctors should be accountable for prescribing the proper medications.
